Premium Nappies

What extras do i need with washable nappies (bumgenius)?

I'm planning to start on washable nappies, i've decided to go with the bumgenius nappies. What do i need? how many nappies should i get? how do i store the dirty nappies until they are washed - are they soaked or kept in a bin? Thanks x

  1. I use bumgenius and they are great. The place you get them will probably offer a ''beginner kit'' of some kind, involving 25-30 one size diapers, the same number of newborn inserts, the same number of regular inserts, a roll of liners, and a diaper pail. They are dry-store nappies because soaking would deteriorate the elastics. Some ''extras'' to consider are some residue-free detergent, some form of spray-on bum cleanser, 40 baby washcloths (you don't need wipes, just throw the washcloths in the diaper pail) and a deodorizing puck for the diaper pail. Also, another roll of liner because you use it up fast. They make an anti-odor spray, but if you wash correctly and frequently, you shouldn't have odor issues... Happy cloth-diapering !
  2. I try to keep 2-3 dozen diapers on hand. No need to rinse or soak them if you are breastfeeding, since breastfed baby poo is softer and dissolves. 6 covers is a good amount to have. If you decide to use prefolds as well, get some snappi fasteners, they are easier than diaper pins. I use baby wash cloths for wipes, and just toss them in with the dirty diapers. I keep my diapers in a plastic bin with a cloth liner that I was with the diapers.
  3. Ive been exclusively using washables for my 9 week-old (Thirsties and Pro-raps covers). Working well. All of my information came from the website where I ordered the covers -Jardine Diapers. They give so much info, I'm sure that any question you have will be addressed there! I just keep in a trash pail w/a waterproof bag, no soaking. I do the wash every other day, about 30 diapers on hand, and I just use a pre-wash, then regular wash and dry.
