What is a diaper rash and what does it look like?

I'm trying to tell if my sons butt is irritated from something he's eaten or if he has a diaper rash. He's never had a diaper rash before so I don't know how to tell the difference. It's deep bright red all around his anus. I've heard that can be a sign of allergy.

  1. i think diaper rash is usually on the cheeks and thighs, skin that doesnt really come into contact with waste and needs it cleaned right away. if you think its something he ate, whats in the diaper is just as important as what it might be doing to his butt
  2. fruits are very acidic. especially uncooked fruits and apples. my baby's tush gets a little red bc the acid in the food gives her diaper rash. not too severe- just a red "crack". Diaper rash is red, irritated skin that may be accompanied by small pimple like bumps. Diaper Rash ointment must have Zinc Oxide in it. if not, it's worthless!
  3. it;s when his bottom cheeks and all around his anus get red and when you clean it it hurts him..just keep putting cream (density) and change his diapers regularly it should go away in a couple of days if it doesn't it might be an allergic reaction ..you could call your doc to get it check out..
  4. if its any where around his pee pee or his butt or butt hole its all dyper rash and its caused by all kinds of things.... just put some rash ointment on it and some powder it will clear up.... by the way the older they get the more rashes they will have ... and some baby's have them more often then others.... ps bad bad dyper rash can even oozz or bleed so don't freak out if that ever happens.... rashes happens to all baby's doesn't mean you did any thing wrong most times.... and most times the pee or poop was on there skin to long....
  5. if its an allergy or some type of infection it will look like red bumps or hives (raised red patches) all over the diaper area , a diaper rash just makes the area red and severe cases may bleed some , its painfull and if it doesn't start to show signs of improvement within three days its best to go to ped where they can prescribe you some antibiotic diaper cream, for now what your describing sounds like a diaper rash , you can use sensitive type baby wipes but warm wet washcloth would be more comfortable for the baby, then dry the area by either blotting it dry with a soft dry cloth or towel or what i do is fan the area with a clean diaper , then apply enough diaper cream to cover the area and form a barrier , very frequently change the diapers and it would also help to let baby stay out of a diaper for 10-15 minutes to air out the area it helps to heal the rash faster. diaper rash is caused by prolonged contact or exposure to wetness so they key is to keep the area as clean and dry as you can .
