Premium Nappies

What sort of cycle is best for nappies (diapers)?

Just wonder what might be the best method for washing cloth nappies and what cycle and can anyone give advise on some kind of routine they've found useful? Thank you

  1. Personally I would soak the day's nappies in a nappy cleaning solution in a sealed bucket, usually overnight and then put them in a washing machine on a hot wash cycle without any additional detergents, and rinse them that way. That kept them stain free, clean and without the chemical build up that occurs if you use too many cleaning products on them. I'd use nappy liners, dispose of the dirty ones and wash the wet ones.
  2. first off get two buckets with tight fitting lids. fill the buckets about 3/4 full with warm water and nappy soaker (napisan, sard nappy soaker, homebrand even). Everytime you have a nappy, (poo or wee) soak it first to keep them white and unstained. Always put a nappy liner in to catch any poo and then you don't have to rinse them out before soaking them (just chuck the liner away). You can get johnson's nappy liners for about $8 for a box of 100 at the supermarket. They are just like a disposable Chux kitchen cloth but prefolded and a bit thicker. They do make homebrand liners but they are too thin for me. I wash the wee'd on liners and reuse them a few times and only throw out the poo'd on ones. Okay, so once the bucket is full (about 10-12 nappies) just empty it out into the laundry tub and put the nappies in the machine. You don't need to add powder/detergent/softener because the napi soaker solution is enough detergent for them. I use a 30min regular cycle to wash them and only use cold water. They should come out looking wonderful! It sounds like a lot of work but really its a matter of filling a bucket, emptying it into the machine when its full and hanging them out! I have done this with my other two kids and my nappies are in great condition. Definately fine for at least this next baby if not more! (not that I'm having anymore that is!!) Good luck with the nappies! Oh, and I have about 24 nappies which is MORE than enough. Plus about 6 pairs of pilcher pants to go over the top of them.
  3. Believe it or not - tea tree oil is supposed to be a good disinfectant for nappies. Dilute in water, leave nappies soaking in it, then wash at 60 degrees.
