Is normal for a newborn to have a diaper rash everyday?

My baby seems to be having diaper rash after every diaper change. I put A&D ointment on her and seems to help. But im not sure I should be putting the cream on everyday and is only a temporary relief. Has any had the same problem?

  1. Not if you use baby powder
  2. The A&D ointment kind of burns actually. I've always used vaseline out of a tube. You should slather it on there really well with every diaper change. Make sure you're changing her often.
  3. It might be a yeast infection. My son used to get them when he was on formula, it just did something to him, they had to prescribe him athlete's foot cream for it, then something stronger since his body got a barrier to it
  4. Try switching to Seventh Generation diapers or to cloth. She's probably allergic to the chemicals in the diapers you are using. Also, don't use wipes, use cotton pads and water instead (and maybe a little Cetaphil soap if you need it, but be sure to rinse). My baby had rash all of the time until i switched to Seventh Generation, and now he never has it. Also, even the "sensitive" wipes give him a serious rash. Also let it air out before you put the diaper back on, and maybe see a doctor to make sure it is not a yeast infection.
  5. i did and it turned out it wasn't a regular rash it was a yeast rash. I would bring it up with the pediatrician.
  6. The problem could be an allergy to the diaper you use, the soap you use, not enough water in system (depending on age - do you give your baby water?), the wipes you use, or even the ointment you are using. Try eliminating or changing each of them for a few days to determine which it is. If it persists or gets worse (causes sores) contact your doctor.
  7. i had used zinc and castor oil cream on my son with every nappy change and he's only had two really bad nappy rashes and he's 16mths old. he only got the nappy rashes when he had diarrhoea
  8. Try putting cornstarch in her bath water. also, i have never heard of a&d ointment but maybe try a different brand, perhaps it is helping but something else could help more. i use sudocream, it is fairly expensive but works REALLY well.
  9. If your baby is on formula, she may be having a reaction to this. I had the same problem with all 3 of my babies, and had to switch to a soy-based formula. Also, the same thing would happen just before their teeth would come in. My oldest daughter got her first tooth at 3 months, and got a really terrible rash from that, too. I remember having to get a prescription cream from the DR. and that along with switching the formula worked really well! I learned to always change their diaper as soon as they were wet, too, and even though it is more work for you, I found that fresh cotton cloth diapers helped the skin to heal better and stay healthy. Good luck!
  10. My son had one that wouldn't go away either. His ped told me to use 1% cortizone cream on it, if it goes away it's just a stubborn one, if it doesn't then you need to start looking at potential other causes (types of diapers, food sensitivity or allergy, yeast infection etc.) Good luck! p.s because she's so young I'd check w/ her doc before you try it.
  11. no. stop using your wipes that you're using. chances are you bought the ones that smell pretty. the whole first month all we used were damp/warm washcloths for wipes. we just bought cheap soft set especially for that. newborns skin is very sensitive. switch to something like pampers sensitive etc. be sure to be gentle when you wipe. pat dry with a soft towel. do not irritate it further with soaps. talk to your pediatrician. that's what they are there for.
  12. Diaper rash cream can actually irrate it more if you use it for long periods of time, and baby powder can dry the rash making it worse. If the rash lasts longer than a week she might be allergic to the brand of diaper you are using. Try switching without using any rash cream or anything for a day or so. If that doesn't help you can always call the peds office and ask and nurse. Hope that helps! Good Luck!
