What can I do for a baby with severe diaper rash?
My 1 year old has a severe diaper rash. He is screaming at the top of his lungs for over an hour now. I tried creams and etc and nothing is working. I was going to take him to the Er but everyone is saying they are just gonna tell me to put some cream on it that there is nothing they can do for it besides that. So I am trying to decide if I should take him or if there is anything I can use to try and get it down. The rash is on his bottom and spread to his genititals.

- If you have an over the counter hydrocortisone....you can use that a couple times in a VERY VERY thin layer. However, don't use this too often. I had to use it with my daughter. However...if it is a very severe rash lasting that's been there awhile you should probably take him in. It could need an antibiotic if it's staff or strep or yeast. Good luck. Oh, a little bit of baby motrin cant hurt him for the discomfort.
- Soak in a warm bath for 10 minutes, 3 times a day, if the skin is very raw. Add 2 Tbsp of baking soda to a baby tub or basin of warm water. If you use a disposable product, change brands or switch to a cloth product. Try a superabsorbent disposable diaper or brief with absorbent gelling material (AGM), which pulls moisture away from the skin. Some people are less likely to develop a rash with one diapering product than another. If you use a cloth product, switch to a disposable product. The cloth or the products used to clean the cloth diaper may be contributing to the rash. If you use cloth and don't want to switch to a disposable product, change detergents. Rinse diapers or briefs twice when washing. Use vinegar in the final rinse at a strength of 1 fl oz vinegar to 1 gal of water. When treating a diaper rash: Do not use a nonprescription adult vaginal yeast medication on a baby or child. Check with your health professional before using any product designed for an adult on a baby or child. Do not use baby powder while a rash is present. The powder can build up in the skin creases and hold moisture, allowing the growth of bacteria that may cause infection. Do not use cornstarch on a rash in the diaper area. Cornstarch also allows bacteria to grow.
- you need to use an antifungal cream at this point. Use Clortrimazone (I hope I'm spelling it right) its OTC so you should be able to get at any pharmacy. Put it everywhere the rash shows and then add the Desitin or Butt Paste (works better) over it. Also do not use the wipes as they have the irritants - just rinse the butt with the water, try not to use the soap either. Chnage him frequently, especially if he poops and let him go bare bottomed for some time to dry it out a little.
- my daughter had the same thing she was really red i tried every thing and nothing worked then i took her to the doc and found out she had a fungus and they gave her a cream that had two kinds in it it works and went away in about a week
- could it possibly be a yeast infection? it looks like little red bumps...my youngest son had one from being on an antibiotic the doctor said....its treated with a cream just like the over the counter ones for women (I didnt even know boys could get them!!!) but he advised that yeast cream and desitin mixed together and reapplied at each diaper change...it was gone within a few days....I would take him to his pediatrician as ER doctors dont know as much about pediatrics as a regular pediatrician..in fact they have been wrong on my boys a few times...if anything for now try putting Desitin all over his bottom and penis(that has worked the best for me the regular desitin NOT the creamy stuff) and letting him go around naked for as long as possible..the more air can get to it the better for healing
- Go to a doctor. It could be a yeast infection or fungus. Sending hugs and earplugs your way.
- it sounds like yeast is the problem. an antifungal cream will help a lot. you can get them over the counter. rinse wipes out with water before use on the baby to prevent burning. change baby at least every hour. urine will burn the rash. air dry the baby after wiping with wipes. use a diaper cream too. switch between creams each diaper change. dr smiths diaper cream works great. so does boudreauxs butt paste.
- My daughter got these horrible diaper rashes where she would just scream for hours like you are talking about and I finally figured out that it was caused by the diapers... Go get some cloth diapers and a very thin layer of cream (BTW: my daughter could only use Aveeno Diaper Rash Cream) Also you might try a different brand of diapers right away, then try these ones again... If he even starts to get red with them the next time, then get rid of them... and stick with the new brand (we could ONLY use Pampers)
- If he enjoys baths (or maybe even if he doesn't) Try a warm bath, just let him soak for a while, & play with him in the bath etc. to distract him... then when he's done let him air dry before putting on a new diaper. When you do put a diaper back on put on some cream or powder. The important thing is to keep it dry, so change him often & if possible let him air dry before putting on the new diaper, or just use a dry washcloth to blot him dry... Best of luck to you both... Call your doctor if: * The diaper rash occurs in the first 6 weeks of life * Pimples and small ulcers form * Your baby has a fever * Your baby loses weight or isn't eating as well as usual * Large bumps or nodules appear * The rash spreads to other areas, such as the arms, face or scalp * The rash doesn't get better after trying the tips on treating diaper rash for 1 week
- My son had the same terrible bum rash when teething...I tool him the the Dr to get a prescription. I was given a 1% solution of hydrocortisone in cream form...cleared it up quickly
- Don't put anything medicated on that baby's bottom until a doctor has looked at it! It could be fungal (yeast), bacterial (staph or strep), or several other things. Hydrocortisone or other steroids could make problems worse. Please see your Pediatrician before it gets worse. It must be pretty bad if your baby is that uncomfortable. Until you get to the doctor, soak him in the tub with oatmeal, and then let him run around naked for a while after he gets out. Air is the best thing for diaper rashes. Then put a layer of a zinc based or petroleum based product until seen by a Doc. Poor baby!
- first of all, how long has he had the rash? if he has had it for more than a few days and you have been putting creams on it i would take him to the doctor because it could be a yeast infection which wont go away without some topical antibiotic. if there are pimple like red bumps, that is a symptom of a yeast infection. one thing you may want to try is to let him be without a diaper on for a little while. of course you will have to monitor him because chances are he is going to pee but it will help the rash dry out. also, when you change his diaper (when you are at home) instead of using a wipe, rinse him off in the bathtub or sink, the wipes can irritate a rash.
- My son hasn't (thankfully) ever had diaper rash but I have heard wonders about Aquaphor by Eucerin...I have used it on his face when it is red and raw from drooling and cold weather and it worked within hours. The tube says that it clears diaper rash within 6 hours...I would try that, it's about $7 a tube but SO worth it. If it doesn't work overnight then definately go to the doctor because Aquaphor should heal anything just "rash"...so if it doesn't it's probably a yeast or an infection. Good luck! :)
- my son has gotta a lot of diaper rashes sense he was born. he is now 17 months. i was told once to use corn startch. it works great just sprikle it on the baby and put the clean diaper on. dont use wipes when you wipe them use a warm wash cloth or paper towl. my son just had a rash and it was gone it two days from using corn startch.(the kind you cook with)
- Here's what I suggest you do....you go to your nearest pharmacy and buy some diaper rash ointment called "Triple Paste"..it's a little more expensive but its all I have EVER used on my children and I swear by it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Try it and let me know if it works for your son!
- Let him have no nappy time during the day
