To anyone who has used cornstarch on a baby for diaper rash, How do you use it?

I asked last night for ideas to help my 7 month old son with his diaper rash. I think its from him teething his top teeth which are coming in together. Anyway, I bought some cornstarch along with creamy A&D diaper rash cream, How should I use the cornstarch? Thanks.

  1. Just like talcum powder.
  2. you sprinkle it..you should get some dr fanny bottom cream from the walmart pharmacy window also called dermacloud.it is the best when taking any kind of rash away..the stuff they sell on the shelf is garbage in my opinion
  3. I would try the A&D first, see if it works...give it a few days. If it doesn't work then I would try an anti-fungal, in case it's a yeast infection. If those don't work try the cornstarch....cornstarch can break out certain children..my 2 oldest react well...my 3rd breaks out horribly! It's like baby powder...just sprinkle it over the rash=)
  4. Just take some in your fingers and rub it on the rash.
  5. I am here to tell you corn starch works great for diaper rash. Just sprinkle it on as you would baby powder, dont worry about too much, just put the diaper on. Make sure all of the redness is at least covered, and if there is more than that, don't worry about it. My kids got bloody rashes whenever they teethed and corn starch was a cheap way to cure it for them. Good luck.
  6. I used the cornstarch as I would baby talc. But not the ointment. My daughter was allergic to something with the disposable diapers so it was a diaper service and having the diapers PH'd to her specifically. Even then, she would still break out from the chemicals that were used. So, at home, she was bare bottomed to air dry with a sprinkling of cornstarch before putting a diaper on her. The doc said her skin needed to breath to heal...
  7. Make sure the baby never wears a wet or nasty diaper. My son let me know right off the bat so it was easy with him.Let him sit in clear water for a while.Let him play like this for awhile after he gets out of the tub. It's good for his bottom to get the fresh air. When you do have to put his diaper back on, the Desitin alone will help heal it.You can sprinkle a light dusting of cornstarch if you want. On his bottom or course. I have never used A&D but it is probably OK too. Him getting his bottom washed every time he has a bad diaper will help the best.Let him sit without one. These two things are very important. My son would wet his diaper and fuss. I would go change it and then he would finish wetting it.I would change him again. Right then.
  8. Cornstarch is used as a dusting powder, to absorb excess moisture. It is usually dispensed from a shaker (being careful that baby doesn't inhale a cloud) but you can apply it by putting some in your hand and smooth it over his sore areas. The A&D is used as a protective barrier to keep the skin from being damaged further. They are usually not used together. Start with the A&D and as the condition improves, use a lite powder dusting. (Using too much powder will actually hold moisture next to the skin) If the rash is really bad, apply petrolium jelly on freshly cleaned area. Change often and when you notice the petrolium jelly is wearing off, gently clean area and reapply. BTW, my daughter got really bad rashes to the point we took her to the doctor because nothing would help. We were sent home with the petrolium jelly instuctions. It worked.
  9. DO NOT USE CORN STARCH ON A RASH!!!!! We all used to use corn starch on our babies, thinking it would help cure diaper rash. It was right there in the kitchen. We used it to thicken puddings and gravies. Come to find out, being a vegetable product, it could make the rash worse. Bacteria cannot fed on talc, which is a mineral. But it sure does love that veggie stuff. For your baby, there are a few things I have learned from 5 kids, 8 grandkids and 6 greatgrand kids. Don't leave him in plastic pants or diapers except at night. The moisture helps the bacteria grow. Cloth diapers during the day may help. A&D, which is just petroleum jelly and vitamins, is good. Wash his bottom in mild soap. Dry it well and power with an unscented plain talcum powder. If you are using cloth diapers or training pants, do not use detergent with bleach, scented or colored. All the fancy s--t they put in laundry soap today has a possiblity of irritating a baby's skin. If the rash does not clear up in a few days, see your doc. It could be an allergy.
  10. With normal diaper rash I do this- After thoroughly cleaning the area and air drying. I coat the butt lightly with corn starch, then add a layer of diaper cream, then corn starch again. It makes a nice barrier. If diaper rash doesn't go away, its likely a yeast infection which happens a lot with teething. For that I use monastat or any yeast cream. Just apply directly to rash and by next diaper change you should see improvement. Also sitting in a baking soda bath helps restore PH levels back to normal too.
  11. a holistic approach would be to apply a live acidophilus culture containing yogurt like (stonybrook farms brand) directly to your babies rash. its natural and i know this works!! you can set him in a plate of room-temp yogurt for a few minutes and then rinse. his rash should go away quickly. and rinse him off each time with warm water instead of wipes. will be easier on him.
