How do you encourage a four-and-a-half-year-old boy to stop wearing disposable diapers at night?

  1. My son had a tougher time transitioning from diapers to pullups and on to regular undies at night than my daughter. He especially had fear about giving up the pullups and then having an accident. To alleviate his fear, we practiced and didn't make him feel badly if he had an accident. We'd limit fluid intake, and encourage him to wake up at least once before we went to bed. I suffered bedwetting myself until I was 8. My problem was that I would "dream" about going to the bathroom and then let loose in bed. Once I realized that my dreaming was the problem (I woke up in the middle of the dream peeing on myself), anytime I had a dream about going potty I trained myself to wake up. I still have to do this and I'm 46! I told my son and daughter about my problem. It made them feel more comfortable that "mommy" had night wetting problems as well. They both had experienced the "potty dream" too! We talked it out. Made it seem (as it is) normal to have to "learn" how to get rid of pullups and not have accidents in cotton undies (especially at night). They would go longer and longer, until there wasn't a problem. We didn't force nor punish. It worked for both kids. Also, who was I to ridicule considering I had the same issue when I was a kid! LOL
  2. Tell him he can have Spiderman underwear!!! (It has worked)
  3. Get rid of them and stop drinks an hour before bedtime.. if he doesnt have an accident the first night he will be excited and everything.. Tell him hes a big boy now and diapers are for babies.. Then when he stays dry all night, give him lots of love!
