How do you get a diaper rash to go away?

My son has had a diaper rash for a few days now and I just can't seem to get it to go away. I've given him oatmeal baths, used different creams, let him go without a diaper for awhile, etc. I need help.

  1. All those are great ways to relieve the rash. It does take more than a few days sometimes for it to go away if it's bad. I always used Zinc for my kids. It sticks to their lil behinds a little better than some of the other stuff on the market. Good luck to you and your lil boy!
  2. For a diaper rash that doesn't go away I found that (per Dr's advice) the only thing that helped was the same stuff we use for yeast infections or the stuff guys use for jock itch. It really works and really is the only thing that ever worked for my boys.
  3. Have you tried a cream like Penaten? If that doesn't work and you've tried a lot of other things taking him to your family doctor would probably be best.
  4. Go to the doctor and get a prescription for that new diaper rash cream. Its on TV, i will look for some more info for you. Sometimes, normal rash cream doesn't help, and the doc can give you samples or scripts for more potent then OTC creams. Ok its a few minuets later and i found the website! Its called Vusion Ointment, and i put the link in here for you. http://www.vusionointment.com/ Good Luck! And if all else fails, try some regular vasaline!
  5. There is a cream called pinksav. Its the best stuff I have seen out there. It has a mentholiptous type smell to it but it works great. Hope his diaper rash goes away.
  6. One of the world's greatest creations is the cream Penaten. It works wonders from everything from diaper rash to chapped lips. I never go anywhere without a pocket sized tin of the stuff. Cheapest place to get it if you have a membership is Costco (got to love that place)
  7. If it is a persistant diaper rash, it may have developed into a yeast infection. Most doctors prefer confirming this in the office, and then you apply lotrimin, etc. 2-3 times per day and it clears up nicely. You will need to wash everything in vinegar (about 1 cup in the washing machine + regular detergent, etc) - towels, sheets, etc. to try and stop this. Also, with my daughter (who had so many yeast infections as a newborn), I would put her bare tush into the sunlight, and you could see the rash disappearing right before your eyes! Keeping the area dry is an absolute must. (Yeah, right, huh? Not easy, I know!) If this is not a yeast, and just a regular old diaper rash, I love Boudroux (sp) butt paste. It works well. (But if this is a yeast and you put more creams, etc. on it, the rash will only get worse. Good luck!!
  8. my daughter has never really had nappy (diaper) rash. i change her nappy regularly throughout the day and use wipes when she has done 'number 2', i rarely use a wipe when she hasn't. she has had a rash only a couple of times (she is now 20mths) and i have just put on some good nappy rash cream, make sure the area is not damp/ wet. air it out when you can/ take the nappy off, after bath time, make sure you dry him well. i'm not an expert but what i do for my daughter works for us :)
  9. Sometimes babies get rashes that will not go away. I would try to change the brand of diaper you are using. I had to do that with my son and his rash cleared up within a day. I switched to Seventh Generation diapers because they do not contain the chemicals like chlorine in them that the other diapers have. Sometimes babies end up getting an allergic reaction to the chlorine since their skin is always changing. I would try switching the diapers. You can find them at your local baby store. I have not found them at Targer or Walmart yet but hopefully soon they will be there. Also try the Triple Paste it is a little pricey but it is well worth it. If it does not go away within a few more days take him to the doctors because it could be a yeast infection. Boys get them too. My son had one when he was on antibiotics and they prescribed a cream to use. Also try not to use wipes. The wipes contain alcohol even the sensitive kind. I would either use wet cotton or a wet wash cloth or go to the breastfeeding section at your local store and buy Lansinoh wipes. They do not contain alcohol and are very good to use on the babies bottom. I hope his little bottom gets better soon.
  10. Sometimes it may be caused by yeast (known as thrush) You can try putting some plain yogurt on it and that might help. Otherwise you could call his pediatrician and they'll call you in Nystatin. For relief try Corn Starch. It really cools and helps relieve the burning.
  11. One other thing you can do (besides all the creams, ointments, balms, etc.) is to let your son's bum get lots of fresh air when possible. Since I assume he's not potty trained (otherwise he wouldn't have a "diaper" rash, right?), you might want to do this outside on a warm day, just in case he has an accident. The air really helps, since moisture can really work against a rash. I also must agree with the previous posters who suggest this might actually be a yeast infection, rather than a diaper rash. When my daughter was an infant, I took her in to the pediatrician for a diaper rash that just wouldn't go away. The doctor explained that the diaper creams weren't helping, because it wasn't a diaper rash but a yeast infection. The anti-fungal he prescribed cleared it up immediately. Good luck!
  12. When you change his diaper, try to clean him very well and if it's possible wash his little behind with warm water instead of using wipes which probably will cause discomfort. Then dry him up and apply "Vasseline"...lots of it. Sometimes the brand of diaper you use is what causes the rash, I know for a fact I only use Huggies Supreme and whenever I buy the cheap brand even when I change him very often he gets the rash so I ALWAYS use Huggies, if you note the cheap brand are kind of plastic in the outside which make their "behinds" hot if you add that they absorb the urine you have the perfect combination for a Horrible and painful diaper rash. And try to change him more often.
  13. Cornstarch always worked for me. Buy a yellow box of pure cornstarch, from the baking-food section of the grocery store. Use an ample amount and it shoud go away quickly, and if used consistantly, should never return.
  14. take him to the pediatrician and get a cram called nystatin my daughter has chronic problems with diaper rashes and the stuff clears a diaper rash in 24 hours
  15. I have been having such a hard time with this too! My son is 13 months old and although I am still breastfeeding I am also giving him whole milk. I started him on it a month ago and ever since he has had a bad diaper rash and horrible, stinky, runny acidy poops. I have tried EVERY product out there in the stores and nothing works. I let him run around nakie for about 10 minutes or so everytime I change his diaper. Im a SAHM so im constantly right there and know exactly when he is going poop and I change him the minute he is done. Im not sure if he is allergic to the milk so I am stopping it for a few days to see what happens. My son Dr also gave us nystatin and it doesnt work for anything! Im thinking of asking for the new stuff called vusion(sp) to see if that works. But oatmeal baths, air, sunlight, creams, powders, corn starch, vaseline all of it hasnt helped. And its getting BAD I mean it is totally red and blistered. He doesnt even want to sit in a bath and I even started to use a wash cloth because of the alcohol in the wipes.... NOTHING. Its so frustrating. I need help too....
  16. try to change the brand of Ur diaper.. and of course do not use a lot of soap.. check out : www.babycenter.com
  17. I stopped using the baby wipes at home and went to warm white wash clothes with just warm water for cleaning bottoms. The rash went away and he very rarely got another one. Sometimes the dyes or perfume in the babywipes irritates.
